Chiropractic care may increase strength, decrease fatigue and improve muscle drive

chiropractic improves strength.jpg

Why this study matters.
When your chiropractor adjusts a subluxation, it improves your strength, prevents fatigue and changes the way the brain drives your muscles.
A subluxation is a dysfunction that occurs when the nervous system isn’t controlling movement of the spine as well as it should be.
"When we adjust…subluxations, we change the way the brain processes what’s going on in our bodies. Hence we are able to better process all that sensory information from throughout the body, and control the body in a better way. Our results were almost identical to three weeks of strength training”
Neuroscientist and Chiropractic Researcher Heidi Haavik

Did you know....?

six things about chiropractic.png

1) Improved Sporting Outcomes

The world’s fastest man Usain Bolt[1], multiple world champion shotputter Valerie Adams[2] and all All Blacks great Mils Muliaina[3] are just some of the sporting legends who swear by chiropractic care. And the latest research backs them up, a series of studies, including one just published in Brain Sciences by  Dr Heidi Haavik PhD and her team at the Centre for Chiropractic Research at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic[4] show large changes in the maximum output of the muscle after a chiropractic adjustment session, which suggests that chiropractic care may help athletes’ brains to more efficiently produce greater physical outputs through better co-ordination of muscles.

2) Improved Pelvic Floor Function for Women

We now know that chiropractic care for women during their pregnancy gives them a greater ability to relax the pelvic floor. For pregnant women, this has the potential to give them a greater degree of control over the pelvic floor muscles, which in turn may make vaginal childbirth easier[5]. Research into this is still at an early stage so we can only speculate on what the impact could be in terms of reduced need for medical intervention, or increased well-being of mother and child. But it does show us that chiropractic may be of significant benefit to pregnant women.

3) Improved Ageing, Less Falls.

A growing body of research suggests that chiropractic care may slow the rate of functional decline as you age, preserve your autonomy, improve your well-being and reduce accidents. It could also save New Zealand millions of dollars in the longer term. Dr Kelly Holt, Dean of Research at the New Zealand College of Chiropractic and his team recently published the results of a research study in New Zealand which has shown chiropractic care in a group aged 65 to 89 can significantly impact several factors that influence the prevention of falls[6].

4) Improved Sex Life

According to a number of studies including one by a team at the Department of Psychological Medicine, University of Auckland, published in the international journal Health Psychology[7], poor posture could be putting our sex drive in jeopardy, causing shallow breathing and exacerbating feelings of stress, which affects our sleep and energy levels. Your family chiropractor will be able to advise you on ways to improve your posture and ensure you have a healthier spine, as a healthy spine and nervous system is a key part of overall health and well-being.

5) Improved Posture – coping with those heels and bags

Your choice of handbag you carry, the weight of books in your children’s school bags and how often you totter about in stratospheric high heels may be affecting your natural posture and damaging health long term[8]. Dr Cassandra Fairest explains: `Over time, physical adaptation and stress can make your body lopsided and affect your spinal posture. Chiropractors are highly trained in assessing and assisting with the adverse effects that this may have.’

6) Improved Living

Chiropractic care is not just about bad backs – it may have a direct effect on the health and integrity of the entire nervous system. A study on the effects of manipulation of the spine on brain function published last year[9] in the journal Neural Plasticity suggests that, at least in part, the mechanisms by which spinal manipulation improves performance are due to a change in processing of information at the prefrontal cortex, which is an area of the brain that is implicated in planning complex behaviours, personality expression, decision making, moderating social behaviour and other higher cognitive functions.

Dr Fairest adds: `In 2017 we want to encourage New Zealanders to visit their chiropractor to ensure that their spines and nervous systems are functioning well. A local NZCA chiropractor will be able to provide advice on ways to improve posture, enhance coordination and support a healthy spine. A healthy spine and well-functioning nervous system is important for overall health and well-being.

Research suggests.....Chiropractic care may improve brain function

switchonbrainwithchiropractic

Why this study matters....

A brain that’s functioning and conducting its activities better has a positive effect on the body. Research shows when a subluxation is adjusted it changes brain function by 20%.

An adjustment impacts the function of the prefrontal cortex, a part of the brain that is responsible for behavior, goal directed tasks, decision making, memory and attention, intelligence, motor control, eye movements and more

“We do know that spinal function does affect brain function. There’s now solid evidence that adjusting the spine changes brain function. This is the fourth time that the effect of adjusting the spine has on the brain has been studied. This last time it was studied and confirmed by an independent medical researcher.”

What is pain?

We all feel pain but do we really understand it?  Pain is an unpleasant sensation occurring in varying degrees of severity associated with injury, disease or emotional disorder.

What types of pain are there?

  • Acute pain as a result of injury to the body and generally disappears when the physical injury heals. Acute pain is linked to tissue injury, which is things like surgery, muscle strains, labour and delivery. You will generally be able to pin point the site of pain when acute.
  • Chronic pain, on the other hand, lasts longer than the healing period - usually at least 3 months. The pain is often vague as well, making it harder to pin point. There are two types of chronic pain - neuropathic and non neuropathic.
  • Neuropathic pain is caused by injury to a nerve and is often described as a numbness, tingling or burning type of pain. Conditions that come to mind with neuropathic pain are diabetes, shingles or peripheral vascular disease.
  • Non neuropathic pain is poorly localised and can feel like a pounding deep ache.

To explain pain simply:

  • The injury occurs
  • The nerves then pick up the injury and send a message to the brain
  • The brain begins to process the message and alerts the body of the pain and responds appropriately
painexplained

That is why it's important for you to have the connection between the brain and the body checked regularly. If messages can't get to and from the brain efficiently then the healing process slows down and you feel pain for longer than necessary.

So what do you need to do if you are experiencing acute or chronic pain? Specific treatment options need to be tailored to each individual. So be sure to consult us at Cromwell Chiropractic or your health care provider to determine the right treatment for you.

Improve your pelvic floor function with chiropractic care

Research studies show you can improve the function of your pelvic floor muscles with chiropractic care. This particular study focused on pregnant women but treatment would be beneficial to anyone with pelvic floor dysfunction or better yet to prevent it from happening!

Why this study matters.
Your pelvic floor muscles are integral to the birth process, and to the prevention
of incontinence.
• Chiropractic care can have an impact on pelvic floor muscles.
• Pregnant women who received chiropractic care had a greater ability to relax their
pelvic floor muscles at rest.
•This relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles may mean that chiropractic care could be
of benefit to pregnant women, as it may help them have a natural vaginal delivery.

"If we can have uncomplicated, natural vaginal delivery without drugs and intervention,
the baby is better off and the woman is better off. This study we have done suggests
chiropractic care can help women by relaxing their pelvic floor muscles.”

Help!! My child has a flat head....

You may or may not have noticed that either your child or a friends child's head looks a little 'different' or asymmetrical - whether it's cone shaped, flattened at the back or twisted. This condition is called plagiocephaly.  Minor cranial asymmetries can be identified and treated to help prevent them leading to plagiocephaly.

Plagiocephaly infants cromwell chiropractic

Here are some of the causes of cranial asymmetries:

  • In utero - mothers health, pelvic distortions and foetal positioning

  • Birth process - foetal positioning and labour time (very fast or very slow)

  • Birth intervention - forceps, vacuum extraction or c-section

Here are some of the early signs of cranial asymmetries:

  • Infant favours looking one side

  • Difficulty sucking/latching

  • Holds the head tipped to one side

  • Dislikes lying on their back

  • Poor sleep patterns

  • It may lead developmental issues with motor and language skills

The good news is Chiropractic may be able to help! At Cromwell Chiropractic we treat babies of all ages with gentle, low force techniques to help reduce tension and stress from birth and early development. Although it is never too late to have your child checked, the first year of life is the optimum time to detect and correct the patterns which can lead to plagiocephaly.

If you have questions or would like to have your child checked please call us on 03 445 0546.

Winter Warmer

I hope you are all wrapped up warm! The Central Otago winter is well and truly here and it is important to boost our immune systems at this time to get us through illness free. A healthy diet, supplements, regular exercise but also plenty of rest and regular chiropractic adjustments are all fantastic ways of boosting the whole family’s immunity.

The Importance of Rest and Relaxation

Rest and Relax Meditation

We all need rest as well as sleep and it is important to make time for it. Think of rest as giving yourself a break or time-out from the hectic pace and pressure of daily life. Meditation, breathing exercises and chiropractic adjustments can be a helpful way to calm your nervous system and aid relaxation. So instead of cramming your days full of busy activities, take some time out to recharge your batteries during these cold winter days, your body will thank you for it.

Pushing your body into overdrive can manifest physically through tight neck and shoulders and usually digestive issues such as gas, bloating, acid reflux. You are also more likely to get sick, as stress and fatigue lower your immune system.

Increased levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline over a long period can lead to adrenal fatigue and an overall hormonal imbalance. This can result in complications such as depression, weight gain, insulin resistance, chronic fatigue, oestrogen dominance, and fertility issues.

Resting doesn’t even have to be done lying down. You can do it while seated, by meditating or engaging in visualization or deep-breathing exercises. The important thing is to give your mind and body a chance to recover and recharge when you’re feeling out of steam, or ideally before you feel like this. So it is very important to make time for rest!

If you would like some more information on relaxation ideas and practices please feel free to email us info@cromwellchiropractic.co.nz or call for an appointment on 03 445 4688.

Happy Resting!
